Journal Entry

Also lots of Amanita, boletes (Leccinum, Suillus, ?), Gymnopolis, Innocybe, Psytharellas, and others. Oysters wer small and few, earlier. More Pluteus and Tricholoma than seen in previous years.

Journal entry2012-08-26 Late summer in the woods. Had a nice flush of Suillus recently. Red and other Russulas everywhere, some Trichloma, some lobsters, and a few Leccinum. Current mystery mushroom (just below) I thought it (wanted to be) a shaggy mane, but isn't shaggy enough.

Nice foray with the Paul Bunyan Club yesterday. What a pleasant group! Just the right size, too. Mushrooming wasn't great except for someone found an early hen-of-the-woods and shared; also picked some 5" puffballs on the way home. Nice ID table and interested newcomers with great questions. Sigh, would be nice to have sucha local club. I'm finding that my memory for fungi is improving and expanding with more experience; better with other people along.

Visited the Lester River property for MLT and found a few nice, small chanterelles. Plan to get out to the Girl Scout property in early September.

Notes for July

The season of the boletes has been good to me. Most frequent edibles are Aspen bolete Leccinum insigne and Lobster mushrooms Hypomyces sp. which are both wonderful. Found most in the dense fir/aspen copses on our land; the ground cover elsewhere may be hiding them. The aspen 'scabbers' make excellent soup and dry well. I've sauted and frozen parts of the huge lobsters. Both are tasty accompaniments to small amounts of chicken or pork with onions, etc.

Other interesting finds were a fruiting body of Fuligo / slime mold (a protist) and, although common, Asterophora lycoperdoides was just too cute; did not smell cute! Russalas are everywhere in a multitude of colors and sizes. Polypore brackets are growing but so far resisting positive identification. The Pleurotus, Corts and Coprinus of May/June are not in evidence. Found some nice Horse Agricus in St Paul but they were too mature for cusine.

July is also the month I got out on forays with both the Paul Bunyan / Walker group and MMS. Truly enjoyed Ty's talk on culturing Oyster mushrooms and will be doing that and others with him. Little sign yet (a small amont of mycelium) of the Chicken of the Woods I started with plug spawn on fir logs and stump. Also hope to start doing some microscope work in August.
